Band History
Bud’ Bond, a realtor active in the community talked to Joe Morris, owner of the Puyallup Music Shop, in November of 1989 about his dream and desire to add some culture to the community. One such dream was the establishment of a community band. Joe had long thought it wasteful to produce many good musicians in the school system and then have nothing for them after graduation. Bud set up the Puyallup Music Association as an umbrella group under which the band would be organized. About twenty musicians met in the Puyallup High School band room in February 1990, and a band was born. (Celebrating Puyallup’s centennial, the group was originally called, Daffodil Valley Centennial Band.)
Over the years, several conductors have led the band: Joe Morris (current Associate Conductor), Bob Harper, Derek Pyle, MSG Rush Ward (U.S. Army, retired), and Rich Powers (current principal Conductor). The all-volunteer band rehearses Tuesday evenings from mid-February to December preparing for several performances annually. The concerts are always free and geared to entertain audiences of all ages. Venues include Puyallup, Orting and Sumner.
The band is supported by generous contributions from concert attendees and local businesses. High school musicians compete every year for cash awards. One contestant is selected to perform a solo with the band in concert mid-May. In addition, the runner-up contestant plays with the band in the Spring concert. The soloist and runner-up both receive cash awards.
