Dr. Mike Lovezzola

The Lovezzola Music Award

Dr. Mike Lovezzola The annual Outstanding High School Soloist Award is funded in large measure from the estate of the late Michael and Norma Lovezzola.  Mike played in the band’s clarinet section for 22 years and was active, in spite of a two year battle with leukemia, right up until shortly before his passing in July, 2012. The grandson of Boston's earliest Italian immigrants, Mike's father encouraged him to take up an instrument at an early age. Excelling in both music and academics, Mike entered Harvard at age 16, played in the university band and graduated Cum Laude. He received his M.D. from Tufts Medical School.  During the Korean conflict, he was the Chief Surgeon at McChord Air Force Base.  Mike worked as a civilian surgeon in the Spokane Veterans Hospital from 1955 to 1966.  Then he moved to Puyallup, where he opened his private practice.  Known to all as “Dr. Love”, he was the first surgeon in Puyallup.  His kind, gentle, and patient manner endeared him to everyone he encountered.

The runner-up award is sponsored by these local businesses and individuals:  Abbey Carpet & Flooring, American Grief Academy, Arrow Lumber & Hardware, East Main Vision, Heritage Bank., Phil & Dawn Frazer, Rosella & Tony Sims, Stephen & Diana Purvine, and Bob and Patsy Collins.
